Ramayana: A Timeless Epic
How many Ramayanas do we know beyond the Valmiki Ramayana? Is the Ramayana Itihasa? How should we understand the authenticity and significance of the later Ramayana traditions? Do different versions contradict one another, or do they offer diverse perspectives on the same timeless narrative? At a time when contemporary books, television serials and films frequently reinterpret the epic and take creative liberties with its narrative, how do we distinguish the original textual traditions from later interpretations and adaptations? What makes a Ramayana authentic, and should authenticity be understood only in terms of textual antiquity or also through its cultural, literary and spiritual significance? Above all, what does the Ramayana have to offer today’s generation? How can we engage with its timeless wisdom, ethical dilemmas, human relationships and spiritual insights while critically understanding its many retellings? Let us revisit the Ramayana not merely as an epic of the past, but as a living intellectual, cultural and spiritual tradition.
Dr. Shakuntala Gawde was invited for a podcast at Devendra Talks by Devendra Mohan, Spiritual Leader and Motivational speaker to unfold unknown stories of Ramayana.
